چکیده

Cyanobacterial secondary metabolites have a diverse antagonistic activity that lead to disintegration of microbial growth. The study was conducted to evaluate the antifungal property possessed by cyanobacteriaAnabaena variabilis in retarding the growth of plant pathogenic fungal species. It was observed that the extracts prepared from Anabaena variabilis were capable of diminishing the growth and further development of plant pathogenic fungal strainsAspergillus niger and Rhizopus stolonifer. Based on zone of inhibition formation, it was concluded that the extracts of Anabaena had significant antifungal efficacy. In addition, methanol and ethanol extracts of Anabaena exhibited maximum antifungal activity against plant pathogenic fungal strains. The antimicrobial attribute of cyanobacteria is due to the presence of cyclic peptide, alkaloids and lipopolysaccharides. Cyanobacteria can be excellent biocontrol sources for plant pathogenic fungi as they can be easily cultured, less expensive compared to synthetic fungicides and ecofriendly, rather they can also promote plant growth and increase the fertility of the soil. The investigation, certainly points out the necessity of exploring new cyanobacterial strains as potentially outstanding sources of antifungal drugs.

5-Aminolevulinate Synthesis in Permeabilized Filaments of the Blue-Green Alga Anabaena variabilis.

Filaments of the blue-green alga Anabaena variabilis permeabilized by dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) produce increased amounts of 5-aminolevulinate in the presence of levulinic acid. The metabolic activity of the filaments remains unperturbed in the presence of up to 7.5% (v/v) DMSO. Studies utilizing DMSO-permeabilized filaments confirm that 5-aminolevulinate is synthesized preferably from glutamate...

Effect of Monochromatic Light on Proton Efflux of the Blue-Green Alga Anabaena variabilis.

Light-induced proton efflux of Anabaena variabilis was found to be biphasic, the second phase being inhibited by the ATPase inhibitor nitrofen (2,4-dichloro-1-[4-nitrophenoxy]benzene). The first, fast phase was triggered by monochromatic light of 707 nanometers, whereas the second, slower phase was not. With 707 nanometers, light, respiratory O(2) uptake was inhibited. Using light composed of t...

Cytochrome Oxidase Activity in Cell-free Preparations from Blue-Green Algae.

The chlorophyll-containing lamellar structures isolated from Anabaena variabilis have the ability to oxidize reduced mammalian cytochrome c in the dark. This activity is oxygen dependent and heat labile. As with other cytochrome oxidase preparations, activity is stimulated by detergents and is sensitive to the ionic strength of the assay solution. The cytochrome oxidase activity is not inhibite...

Differential regulation by low temperature of the gene for an RNA-binding protein, rbpA3, in the cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis strain M3.

The RbpA3 protein of Anabaena variabilis contains one RNA-binding domain with a carboxy-terminal glycinerich domain. Levels of two transcripts of the rbpA3 gene were differentially regulated by growth temperature. The RbpA3 protein is related to the RbpC protein within the group of cyanobacterial Rbps.

Antifungal activity of the Trachyspermum ammi essential oil on some of the most common fungal pathogens in animals

Background: The increasing resistance to antifungal drugs and the reduced number of available drugs led to the search for therapeutic alternatives among aromatic plants and their essential oils, empirically used by antifungal effects. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of Trachyspermum ammi essential oil (EO) against the most frequent pathogenic...
